Fr. Walsh builds his message of reverence for life emerging from the tremendous example of reverence at the funeral of Morgan Crofton a 19 year old member who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. The kind of reverence for life exhibited at Morgan’s funeral is one which we should apply as we face all life issues. These issues span bioethics, abortion, end of life considerations and the lethal violence becoming more prevalent. We are challenged to consider the understanding of St. Francis that everything belongs to God and ultimately is a gift from God. In doing so perhaps we can move beyond an ethic of convenience, where the value of life is measured by the value of it’s origin rather than its perceived usefulness. As it pertains to the struggles in supporting the dignity of life in all it’s stages, we are reminded in today’s second reading to “bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God.”
