Deacon Bob uses the Gospel today to help us understand some of the upcoming changes in the translation of the words used during the Roman Catholic Mass. Many of the words we speak and the prayers spoken by the priest will change, but the Mass is yet the same. Today’s Gospel leads to an understanding that as the Church teaches, Christ came to this world, suffered, died and rose for the salvation of ALL. However, in the “re-translation” of the Mass, The priest will use the expression that Christ died for the sins of “many.” Listen to this clear explanation of the equality of many and all based on scriptural reference.

Fr. Glen Charest relates his childhood disappointment of not getting the go kart he wanted from his father to the persistence of the widow with the judge in today’s Gospel message. He realized that he was not deserving of the gift as the widow was deserving of a favorable judgment. While waiting for the go kart how many gifts did he receive that he didn’t appreciate? Our persistent prayer might be similar in asking for what we want rather than what we need or deserve. Fixated on that which we are asking perhaps we miss all the gifts that God is unfolding before us.

We are challenged to persevere in prayer asking for faith, much as St. Margaret Mary was devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was in a cloistered order and she prayed and worked to make her heart more like Christ’s heart.

Walsh builds his message of reverence for life emerging from the tremendous example of reverence at the funeral of Morgan Crofton a 19 year old member who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. The kind of reverence for life exhibited at Morgan’s funeral is one which we should apply as we face all life issues. These issues span bioethics, abortion, end of life considerations and the lethal violence becoming more prevalent. We are challenged to consider the understanding of St. Francis that everything belongs to God and ultimately is a gift from God. In doing so perhaps we can move beyond an ethic of convenience, where the value of life is measured by the value of it’s origin rather than its perceived usefulness. As it pertains to the struggles in supporting the dignity of life in all it’s stages, we are reminded in today’s second reading to “bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God.”
